Intent

Our aim at Combs Ford Primary School is to help every child become a confident reader, writer and communicator. We want pupils to develop a love of reading, enjoy a wide range of high-quality books and gain the language skills they need to express themselves clearly. Through English, children build the knowledge, vocabulary and confidence that will support them across the curriculum and prepare them for life beyond school.

Implementation

We teach English through the key areas of spoken language, phonics, reading, writing and spelling, punctuation and grammar. High-quality texts sit at the heart of our curriculum, providing meaningful opportunities for children to read, discuss, analyse and write for different purposes. Reading for pleasure is actively encouraged, while structured teaching develops fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and writing skills. Regular opportunities for discussion, presentations and collaborative learning help pupils develop confidence in speaking and listening. Through our writing curriculum, children develop strong foundational skills and a genuine love of writing, enabling them to communicate their ideas with confidence before progressing to increasingly sophisticated writing structures, genres and text types as they move through the school. Links are carefully planned both within English and across the wider curriculum so that children can revisit previous learning, make connections between subjects and strengthen their understanding.

Impact

Children leave each year group as increasingly fluent readers who can understand, discuss and enjoy a range of texts. They develop the vocabulary, knowledge and skills needed to communicate effectively through both speech and writing. Pupils become confident in sharing ideas, explaining their thinking and adapting their language for different audiences and purposes. By making connections across their learning, children are able to recall and apply knowledge more effectively, helping them to develop a deeper understanding of the curriculum. Most importantly, they develop a lasting appreciation of reading and literature, alongside the literacy skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.
